Do not be afraid—death is defeated:

God has answered our prayer - Luke 1:13.

We have found favor with God - Luke 1:30

God is at work in this situation - Matthew 1:20

God has provided a Savior - Luke 2:10-11

Like sin and sickness and sorrow, death does not belong in this world that God created. As Scripture clearly reveals, death is a curse, introduced in response to our rebellion against God (see Genesis 2:17). Yet we read in the Old Testament Book of Isaiah that God "will swallow up death" (Isaiah 25:8).

But when will that be?

Scripture tells us that this triumph has already begun when our Lord Jesus walked out of His own tomb two thousand years ago. He "abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel" (2 Timothy 1:10). But we still await the complete victory!

We have the confident assurance that our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ will return, raise His people from their graves, and overthrow death, which is "the last enemy to be destroyed" (1 Corinthians 15:26). The Apostle Paul celebrates this with an allusion to Isaiah's promise: "Then shall come to pass the saying that is written: 'Death is swallowed up in victory'" (1 Corinthians 15:54; see also Isaiah 25:8).
